About Our Logo
by Bill Johnson
My favorite place in the world is the Southern Rocky Mountain range known as Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Thats Spanish for Blood of Christ. When I was a Boy Scout, I was fortunate to be a part of a Troop in Evansville, Indiana, my hometown. Troop 1 of the Buffalo Trace Counsel traveled to Philmont Camp in northeastern New Mexico. We hiked over 50 miles in 5 days. At 15 years old, it was my first trip without parents and farther west than Id ever been. The Sangre de Cristo mountains were captivating, mystical and Gods presence was everywhere.
Ive been to the Sangre de Cristo Mountains many times since. The last time I hiked those mountains was in 1997. I accompanied a group of high school students and adults to the trails in the Kit Carson National Forest situated very close to Camp Philmont. Kelly Sherman, our webmaster & artist, was on that trip, too. She snapped the photograph that we are using in our logo. It is of Box Canyon outside Taos, New Mexico.
The two spheres in our logo represent, for me, the humanity of Christ and the suffering of Christ. Kelly made the Sunburst to resemble a crown of thorns. The two images come together over the Sangre de Christo.
So here we have a place, I believe, is one of the most spiritual spaces in the world - and a symbol for God over it all. Does this mean we are an exclusive Christian organization? No. However, LCC ia a value-based organization and open to all that seek to improve their lives.
